Editorial: Can "The Nepal Digest" be Humorous? By Ujjwal Bhattarai
|
Dear Readers:
I hope you all have a delighting Dashain and Dipawali. John Lancaster writes in Washington Post that Maoists and the army appear to be trying to enhance their bargaining power by inflicting as much pain as possible on the other side, with civilians frequently caught in the middle. We are again forced to face this reality of our country, immediately after the ecstatic and nonchalant festive weekends. At these difficult times, I find a brief solace only in humor.
About a year ago, when I was about to rejuvenate The Nepal Digest(TND), I had asked few very loyal readers of TND that what kind of ezine they would like to see TND develop into. Most of the adjectives were "bold", "thought-provoking", "free/open", and "non-political, non-religious,". One exceptional demand was also to be "humorous". Being humorous is tricky. However, in this issue of TND, there are pieces which are really humorous and yet so powerful and meaningful. They outline nation's entire scenario - present and future. TND is taking steps to be also called a 'humorous' ezine. Thank you Surendra Devkota and "Misunderstood Poet".
November/December is the month to file for Diversity Visa Lottery, if you need to. There are rumors that people are being charged around Rs. 1,000 in Nepal just to fill the form for diversity visa 2005 for USA, which is free. I had received a lots of responses for TND's past artcle on DV2005. So for those of you who are still interested, please visit http://www.dvlottery.state.gov/. DV is now open from November 1st to December 30 of this year. The website contains all the necessary information. If you are in doubt, please feel free to post your question.
TND's heartfelt appreciation for following sponsors of TND for this issue:
Mr. Dinker Amatya/ Mr. Madhukar Amatya Mr. Shailesh Sigdel/ Mr.Raju Joshee
Thank you for your support!

Dear G. Pokherel ji: Thank you for your valid concern. The Nepal Digest (TND) will certainly be a better forum with a devoted and capable editorial board. TND will welcome anyone who is willing to devote time and energy for this good cause. If you are interested or if you know someone who might be interested to help TND by serving in the editorial board, please contact me. I am also sending you this message to your personal email. I am certain that TND will benefit from your endeavors. Thank you.

Ujjwal writes"About a year ago, when I was about to rejuvenate The Nepal Digest(TND), I had asked few very loyal readers of TND that what kind of ezine they would like to see TND develop into." I hope you don't mind pointing some weakness on TND: It needs a dedicated editorial board. Well, Ujjwal himself doing commendable job of editing and publishing it, the question remains "how long are you going to work alone?". Editorial board will enhance the quality and contents of the articles, and avoid objectionable and ambuguities. Editorial board can not only edit stuffs in forth coming article, but, also can plan the articles for future issues and make the publication timely and routinely.

Dear Hari ji: For DV 2005: 1. Go to http://www.dvlottery.state.gov/ and first read the instructions. 2. Prepare a picture of size 320 by 240 pixels if taken by digital camara or scan your 2x2 sq. in picture from your scanner to have 300x300 pixel. Use the photo validator at http://www.dvlottery.state.gov/photo.php 3. Start your application at www.dvlottery.state.gov/application_one.php Good luck.

It seems that "sister" sponsors are now feeding "bro" TND, as the picture in TND of this issue shows. Good luck to TND.
