Guterres arrives in Nepal to address the effects of climate change in the Himalayas

Kathmandu, October 29 (EFE).- The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, landed on Sunday in Kathmandu for a four-day official visit focused on addressing sustainability plans in the Himalayan country, one of the most vulnerable areas to the effects of climate change .

During his four-day visit, Guterres plans to meet with Nepali President Ram Chandra Poudel and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to discuss issues related to the ongoing peace process in Nepal and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, he said. in a statement from the Nepalese ministry. of foreign affairs.

The Secretary-General will also visit the Everest region, the roof of the world and Annapurna Base Camp, where he will talk to the residents of the area about the impact of climate change on their daily livelihoods.

Guterres will be accompanied by the Under-Secretary-General for UN Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, and the UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal, Hanaa Singer-Hamdy.

This is the second visit that Guterres has made to Nepal, one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, and the first during his tenure as UN Secretary-General.

In 2017, he traveled to the Himalayan country to assess the situation of Bhutanese refugees living in eastern Nepal. At the time he was responsible for the UN refugee mission. EFE
