India is gearing up to conduct key tests for the Gaganyaan space mission

India is all set to conduct a crucial test for its ambitious space mission, Gaganyaan, on October 21. The test will involve launching an empty module into outer space and bringing it back to Earth. This mission, planned for next year, will be India’s first manned space flight and is estimated to cost around 90.23 billion Indian rupees ($1.08 billion).

The Gaganyaan mission aims to launch a crew of three astronauts in a habitable space capsule to an orbit 400 km (250 miles) above the Earth’s surface. The module returns safely to land in Indian waters. The term “Gaganyaan” is derived from Hindi, which translates as “craft in the sky.”

The upcoming test will take place at the Satish Dhawan Space Center in southern India and will primarily focus on evaluating the effectiveness of the crew escape system, designed to evacuate astronauts in emergency situations. After this test, another flight will be made to send a robot into outer space before the final manned mission.

Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh revealed that next year’s test flight will carry a female robotic astronaut named Vyommitra. Although an exact timeline has not been revealed, Gaganyaan’s main mission is expected to be launched from India’s main spaceport in Sriharikota in late 2024.

The announcement was made during a program in honor of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) scientists who participated in the Chandrayaan-3 mission. This mission recently achieved the remarkable milestone of making India the first country to land on the South Pole of the Moon. In addition to this success, the Indian space agency also launched its first solar mission in September, focusing on studying the sun.
