Spanish representative addresses issues and rights of people with disabilities in India

New Delhi, December 12 (EFE).- The Ambassador of the Special Mission of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Ángel Lossada Torres-Quevedo, is in India to address the cooperation and management of mechanisms that guarantee people’s rights with disabilities.

Although all countries to a greater or lesser extent present the same challenges in ensuring the inclusion of people with disabilities, the dimensions of a country such as e.g. India “already the complexities of dealing with its own disability, development challenges are likely to multiply. and accumulate,” he said this Tuesday in statements to EFE during an official visit to New Delhi.

“The good way to deal with disability is to adapt all things, the roads, the means of communication, so that they are accessible to everyone. The best formula is universal accessibility,” he explained.

The combination of factors is different, for example, for a woman with a disability who lives in poverty than for someone who has greater financial privileges.

“Access to mechanisms is not the same because disability management is not easy and it is not necessarily cheap,” he added.

In this sense, the Spanish ambassador highlighted the potential of Spain, “which asks who wants rights”, and its society, which has been a leader in mobilizing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

This international declaration, which has been part of the Spanish legal system since 2008, states “how to do it, what adjustments must be made in the legal mechanisms so that the lives of people with disabilities allow them to fully enjoy their fundamental rights and public liberties,” Lossada said.

“I think we can now be proud of this system, but I insist thanks to the power of Spanish civil society, which systematically mobilizes resources, which mobilizes people, which mobilizes public opinion,” he added.

“In Spain there is a lot of work and we can cooperate with many countries from a perspective on the subject,” the Spanish ambassador concluded. EFE
