Sundar Pichai: India well positioned when the shift to artificial intelligence happens: Google CEO Sundar Pichai

Mountain View: For India and other emerging countries, technology should provide opportunities to leap forward, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said at an international media panel here on Wednesday.

“India was never going to cross the developed world in terms of personal computer penetration, but on mobile, more people got access as a percentage of the population than the previous generation. People didn’t have landlines, but most got cell phones. With every technology shift you have a better opportunity to drive this penetration. This is really true with artificial intelligence,” Pichai told reporters.

Pichai, who is also the CEO of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, spoke a day after announcing several of Google’s innovations in his keynote address at Google I/O connect, the company’s annual developer conference.

“AI tools for many of our products… India is the number one country in terms of user base. To serve them, we are committed to bringing the same AI tools. We are seeing a lot of developer activity from India on I think already , that it will be an exciting moment when the switch to artificial intelligence happens, he said.

Pichai was joined by Elizabeth Reid, vice president and head of the search; James Manyika, Senior Vice President, Technology and Community; and Koray Kavukcuoglu, Chief Technology Officer of Google DeepMind.

“As we make more progress with AI, we need to bring more perspectives into the field. We need to involve social scientists in AI as we do more in the field and as we think about responsible AI,” said Pichai.

Commenting on deepfakes and synthetically generated content at a time when elections in India are underway, while the US and several other countries are approaching the polls, he said: “We are going through a year where one in three people (in the world ) ) is participating in the election process, which in itself is wonderful and worth celebrating. AlphaFold 3 is a new AI model developed by Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs. By accurately predicting the structure of proteins, DNA, RNA, ligands and more and how they interact, it aids in the understanding of the biological world and drug discovery.

“It is very important to understand how the brain works. We were able to show the first map of a small piece of the human brain. That’s what we partnered with Harvard for and many others. We have 1.8 million people accessing this from 119 countries. Many of them are working on neglected diseases which are otherwise very difficult to work on,” said Manyika.
