The government approves the temporary program for the School Libraries Improvement Plan

ACN Barcelona – The government has approved the temporary program for the Plan for the Improvement of School Libraries (PLAMIB) in Catalonia, with the aim of reactivating school libraries while increasing students’ reading comprehension levels. It is one of the measures included in the National Book and Reading Plan of the Departments of Culture and Education to promote reading habits and reading in Catalan, approved by the government last July. The plan, which starts this school year, will last for three years, until the 2025-2026 school year. It will start as a pilot project in 50 education centers (35 public and 15 charter schools) and will gradually expand to 400 more public and charter schools.

In addition, every school year the Ministry of Education will accompany 200 centers through territorial networks, which will guide them in terms of reading comprehension needs. At the same time, it will offer all centers materials, training and other resources with a focus on improving reading comprehension.

The plan envisages providing a team of six people with a diploma in librarianship and two teaching technicians who will provide intensive support to both the pilot library plan’s 50 centers and the 200 centers for improving reading comprehension.

The implementation of the new program will e.g. involve accompanying the education centers to update the reading collections and have library management software compatible with public libraries, as well as creating territorial networks to promote and improve school libraries for reading comprehension in order to share experiences and actions.
