The Union of Farmers rejects Foment’s proposal to expand Barcelona airport

ACN Barcelona – Unió de Pagesos rejects the 11 proposals to expand Barcelona airport presented by Foment del Treball. In a statement on Tuesday, the union accused the employer of having prepared the report “without taking into account the professional agricultural community or any of the most representative agricultural organizations”. The nuanced entity that has only been part of the Commission is the Catalan Agricultural Institute of Sant Isidre, “member of Foment and historical representative of the absentee owners”, he points out. As for the project to extend the third runway by 840 meters, he says that “it would mean giving up several hectares of productive agricultural land to restore them in accordance with European directives”.

The union complains that the response of the Spanish state and business in a “climate emergency where sustainable and local food systems are particularly relevant” is “the impact of an agricultural area of great importance”.

The Union of Farmers emphasizes that “the protection and management of the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park is more necessary than ever”. For this reason, he urges the Generalitat to prepare the specific agricultural sector plan for Baix Llobregat and recalls that the Minister of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda, David Mascort, made this commitment.

It also calls on governments to decide which model they are defending: “Whether it is urbanization of expectations or a sustainable and modern model that exploits food sovereignty.”

On the other hand, the professional organization asks that the Agricultural Park, within the framework of the application of the EU directives, be integrated as part of the green infrastructure.
