The previous day, military contingents rescued more than 800 visitors, including the elderly, women and children, who were trapped by winter storms in high-altitude areas of eastern Sikkim, media reported.

The tourists were moved to safe areas and provided with warm clothes, medical attention and food in the barracks where they found refuge.

Similar weather conditions were reported in Uttarakhand where, according to the weather department, freezing temperatures are covering several parts of this area. There are reports of heavy snowfall in Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib, Auli and Joshimath in Chamoli district and to a lesser extent in Harshil and Gangotri in Uttarkashi and Kumaon division, the highlands of Bageshwar district, experts said.

The authorities discovered an increase in the movement of tourists in the mountainous areas, attracted by the panorama.
