Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to formally inaugurate the second edition of Semicon India 2023 at Gandhinagar on Friday where heads of Micron Technology, Foxconn and Vedanta Group are expected to remain present.
Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will deliver the welcome address and it will be followed by addresses by Anil Agarwal, chairman Vedanta Group, Sanjay Mehrotra, President and CEO, Micron Technology and Young Liu, Chairman, Foxconn. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is also scheduled to remain present during the event.
Apart from them, senior representatives of firms from the semiconductor and electronics sectors like Applied Materials, Cadence and AMD are also scheduled to remain present. While the first edition of the event was held last year in Bengaluru, the second edition is being held at a time when Gujarat has bagged a Rs 22,500 crore project from US-based Micron Technology.
Last year, Gujarat had pipped Maharashtra and bagged the Rs 1.54 lakh crore Vedanta-Foxconn semiconductor project. This year, the joint venture between the two private entities fell apart and now the firms are expected to pitch for separate projects which are also expected to be set up in the state.

This is, however, not the first time Gujarat is trying to woo semiconductor units to the state. Way back in 2009, Semiconductor Fabrication was notified as a Focus Sector under the Scheme for Assistance to Mega/ Innovative Projects as per the Government Resolution of Industries and Mines Department of the state government.
At a policy level, semiconductor firms were also lured under the Electronics Policy of Gujarat government (2014-19). However, the attempts did not bear fruit.
In 2008 Vibrant Gujarat summit Hindustan Semiconductors and Manufacturing Company (HSMC) had proposed to set up a Rs 30,000 crore unit on 700 acre at Prantij in North Gujarat. In February 2014, the Government of India gave an approval for setting up of Semiconductor Wafer Fabrication (FAB) manufacturing facility at Prantij at a cost of Rs 29,013 crore. M/s HSMC Technologies India Pvt Ltd along with ST Microelectronics and Silterra Malaysia Sdn. Bhd was expected to set up this unit. However, the project could not materialise despite the state government giving land and the Centre giving the necessary approvals for some reasons, state government officials had told The Indian Express earlier.
