Oppenheimer box office collection Day 6: Christopher Nolan’s film makes over Rs 67 crore in less than a week, India remains third-biggest market in the world | Hollywood News

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has been enjoying a great run in Indian cinemas. After earning Rs 62 crore in the first five days, Oppenheimer earned Rs 5.85 crore on its sixth day in theatres, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. This brings the film’s nett collection in India to Rs 67.85 crore.

Oppenheimer started its box office journey in India with Rs 14.5 crore and collected Rs 17 crore on Saturday, followed by Rs 17.25 crore on Sunday. On its first Monday, the film collected Rs 7 crore. It remains to be seen if Oppenheimer will pick up its pace during the second weekend, where it will face competition against Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

Oppenheimer was released alongside Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and while the three-hour biographical drama is miles ahead of Barbie in India, the global box office suggests otherwise. As per Box Office Mojo, Barbie has collected over $472 million while Oppenheimer has managed to mint $220 million. India is the film’s third-biggest market in the world, behind the US and the UK.

Oppenheimer has generated some controversy in India with regards to a scene involving the Bhagavad Gita. While the scene was trimmed by the CBFC, a certain section of the audience has said that it hurt their religious sentiments. Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur is reportedly upset with the scene. As per sources, Thakur has demanded an explanation from the CBFC, and an action might be taken against those who cleared the scene in its present form.

Recently, actor Varun Dhawan, who was last seen in Bawaal, said that Hollywood “should be more sensitive to us.” While he did not name Oppenheimer, he implied that the scene was hurtful to Indians. He told Pinkvilla, “I don’t understand where that sensitivity goes when they watch, suppose, an English film. Where does that sensitivity go? They are allowed to do everything, they are allowed to take leaps and show everything, but you will find that correct. I know people who’ve felt very triggered watching a small scene in a… It’s a brilliant film, but a small scene in a recently released film. But it is a scene which is important to our culture, and our country, but that is okay for you. You don’t feel they should be more sensitive to us? Where does your criticism go then? But with us, you want to get personal.”
